Weekly curbside pick-up
Boston now has weekly pick up of recyclable items from private homes and
participating apartment/condo buildings. It's the same day as trash day
if you have one trash pick-up a week; the first trash day if you have
two; and the middle day if you have three.
Plastics, glass and metal
What you can put in your blue box:
- Yogurt cups
- Peanut-butter jars
- Any other plastic container marked with 1-7
- Food boxes (frozen food boxes, cereal boxes, instant rice boxes etc. as long as not greasy)
- White paper
- Any item that is at least 75% paper (so can leave windows on envelopes,
- etc.)
- Softcover books
- All cardboard
What you can't put in your blue box:
- Plastic bottles and jugs without "1" through "7"
symbols on bottom
- Plastic bags
- Broken glass
- Pyrex
- Ceramics
- Window Glass
- Lightbulbs
- Paint cans
- Cans used to store hazardous materials
- Other metal items
- Food boxes
Paper/cardboard items
Put newspapers, magazines and telephone books in brown paper bags. Corrugated
cardboard can be flattened and placed under newspapers or recycling bin.
Household hazardous wastes
The city runs several drop-off centers for used motor oil, oil-based paints and pesticides. Do NOT put these in your recycling bin. For locations of drop-off centers, call (617) 635-4959.
